Recreation Road Allotments are a historic allotment site located on Recreation Road in Selby. We are a committed group of likeminded gardeners working to purchase the land we occupy and go forward to rehabilitate the property so we are of greater use to the surrounding community.

Recreation Road Allotments is in the process of converting its structure as an unincorporated community club to a CIC (Community Interest Company) to facilitate the purchase of the land as well as to structure ownership and management.

We are currently recruiting both Executive and Non-Executive board members to help with the establishment of the board and as well as bring their experience and perspective to our strategic objectives. We are seeking to create a diverse board which represents the demographics of the wider community.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in an organisation that will have a real impact on the lives of Selby and Yorkshire residents. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you will help ensure that the vital role that allotments play in our communities is not overlooked.

About this opportunity

Location: Flexible.

The majority of the work for this volunteer position will be remote. There will be a requirement to meet 2 times a year for an in-person meeting. At this time, travel expenses for this are not reimbursed, but they may be in the future. We are seeking board members across many demographics. Applicants outside of the local area but with a keen interest in the project are welcome.

Time Required: Flexible.

The board will meet twice a year (once in April and once in October). These meetings will last between 3-4 hours.

Occasionally, urgent decisions may need to be taken electronically. You will be issued an official ogranisation e-mail for this purpose and will need to check it periodically.

You will be expected to prepare for meetings by reading any relevant papers or proposals in advance and may be invited (but not required) to attend events at the allotments such as community outreach days.

Job Duties:

This is a fun and dynamic role which assists in steering and defining the broader picture of the allotments, making sure that we work towards reaching our community service goals.

Directors are welcome to add their expertise or guidance where it is appropriate and discuss upcoming and in-progress projects.

We are excited to work on projects which focus on the following areas:

  • Gardening at home and in the community;
  • Creating accessible spaces for gardeners;
  • Educating the community about the benefits of gardening;
  • Integrating wild spaces into gardening spaces as well as promoting biodiversity;
  • Integrating the arts into green spaces.

A small, but important part of being a director for Recreation Road Allotments is ensuring that the committee submit correct and timely paperwork to the CIC commission as well as to the companies house.

Training opportunities will be made available and assistance will be provided in understanding the scope of the role.

An interest in gardening, community projects or the arts is desirable.

Successful candidates must show good character and those with a history of significant criminal offenses, previously disqualified directors and/or people with undischarged bankruptcies will not be considered.
